All of you would have been updated with the latest news on SOPA/PIPA and the ongoing Indian politics to censor some websites(to be specific 21 of them).
Doesn’t SOPA/PIPA violate the Right to Freedom of Speech and Innovation? Doesn’t it show what the U.S Government is actually not meaning what they have proudly claimed Right to Freedom?
Same thing to the Indian censorship demands by the Government: Doesn’t it violate the Right to Freedom of Speech, and in general Right to Freedom proudly stated in the Indian Constitution? The Internet has always been a free place to exchange views, thoughts, ideals and ideas alike. It has helped in the downfall of many unfaithful and inhumane governments ; eg. the Arab Spring. It helps students, professionals and everyone alike. And they want to censor this beautiful invention?
Internet giants like Facebook and Google and not to forget, something which has helped all of us, Wikipedia are against this. Not only them, but even Sir Timothy “Tim” Berners-Lee is against these bills.

“When ideas are blocked, information deleted, conversations stifled and people constrained in their choices, the Internet is diminished for all of us.. There isn’t an economic Internet and a social Internet and a political Internet. There’s just the Internet.” – Hillary Clinton (United States Secretary of State), against SOPA/PIPA.

hey! good stuff buddy. I am sure most of the people will agree with what you have written. Maybe one you could have thrown some light on what our govt. stands to gain as the move is definitely not populist. They seem to be taking quite a lot out of China’s rulebook.
Anyways, Good Job!

Thanks a lot

I haven’t managed to get a copy of all the 21 sites Sibal has tried to prosecute
but all I hope is that WordPress is not one of them
And what posses a serious threat is SOPA and PIPA.
And ya, I have no clue why the govt. wants to do it

This is amazing! I totally agree, SOPA stifles the freedom of expression and creativity we love on The Internet. You can read follow up information on the protests, and The White House’s response at: http://binaryculture.blogspot.com/2012/01/sopa-defeated.html
I also really appreciate how The Internet came together to protest this unjust legislation. Even people in other countries are recognizing the value and precedent of legislation such as this, and putting a stop to it now. I really respect anyone standing up for justice, regardless if they are effected or not.

Firstly it is a great article, we are truly Illuminared. As far as your violation of the Constitution is concerned well it clearly states that it is not an absolute law like the USA for instance. Hence contents in India can be censored. Legally we cant question Article 19 but yes what you say is indeed a reasonable and rational. But, what Mr. Kapil Sibal has said about maligning our leaders, well we must understand that that is indeed a grievous fault of the educated and civil population. We also must not forget that the USA had themselves locked down websites that compared Osama with Obama and expressed stern views against them. In most European nations, a site maligning Christianity and the Vatican were banned under pressure from the Vatican. So nowhere is the right to freedom of speech and expression absolute but I believe if the content is provocative it should be censored. The question we should ask instead is who sets the parameters for judging the difference between a provocative content and an expression.
